SiC Modules Gain Traction: Driving Efficiency Upgrade in New Energy Vehicles

12 Nov 2025 News

In 2025, SiC power modules dominate high-end NEVs; BYD leads China's full-chain layout, domestic firms narrow gaps vs. global giants amid $4.5B market and cost challenges.

Silicon Carbide (SiC) power modules are becoming the core choice for high-end new energy vehicles (NEVs), driven by the demand for longer range and faster charging. As the automotive industry shifts from IGBT to SiC, the global automotive-grade SiC market is expected to reach $4.5 billion in 2025, with Chinese enterprises accelerating their layout in the full industrial chain.

SiC modules offer significant advantages over traditional IGBTs: they reduce power loss by 50%, increase the efficiency of power control units by 8-10%, and extend vehicle range by 15-20% while shortening charging time. BYD Semiconductor has taken the lead in building a full industrial chain layout from SiC chip design, manufacturing to packaging and testing. Its self-developed SiC modules are applied in BYD's high-end models, significantly improving overall vehicle performance. The company's SiC chip self-supply rate has exceeded 60%, and it has started supplying to third-party automakers, becoming a leader in China's power semiconductor market.

International competition is also intensifying. Wolfspeed, onsemi, and Rohm dominate the global automotive-grade SiC market, but domestic firms are narrowing the gap through technological breakthroughs. For example, SemiDrive has launched a SiC-based traction inverter chip that passed AEC-Q101 certification, entering the supply chain of Changan Automobile. However, the industry faces challenges such as high production costs, limited wafer supply, and immature packaging technology. With the expansion of SiC production capacity and the decline in costs, it is expected that SiC modules will be widely adopted in mid-range NEVs by 2027, further promoting the electrification transformation of the automotive industry.
