Wuhan University's Beidou high-precision chips break foreign blockades, boast ultra-low power consumption & superior accuracy, drive industrialization and lead China’s Beidou industry upgrade.

A research team from Wuhan University has made a major breakthrough in Beidou high-precision positioning and timing chips, breaking the long-term technical blockade of foreign enterprises and achieving independent control of core technologies in this field. The achievement, part of Hubei Provincial Department of Science and Technology’s "sharp knife" technology research project, has launched a new round of upgrading in the global high-precision positioning chip market.
The independently developed Beidou high-precision positioning SoC chip (including automotive-grade) and indoor-outdoor seamless positioning module show outstanding performance that surpasses international advanced levels. The chip’s power consumption is as low as 90mW, far lower than the 200mW of mainstream international products, while its static monitoring accuracy reaches 2-3 millimeters, exceeding the international advanced level of 5 millimeters. To solve the pain points of high power consumption and low accuracy, the team adopted software-hardware collaborative intelligent power control technology and a Transformer AI model-based satellite selection scheme, which significantly improved satellite signal observation quality in complex scenarios.
In terms of dynamic positioning, the Beidou intelligent multi-source fusion module developed by the team achieves a vehicle-mounted dynamic positioning accuracy of 0.65 meters in complex urban environments and an indoor-outdoor seamless positioning accuracy of 0.67 meters, realizing continuous high-precision positioning in weak signal scenarios. These technological breakthroughs have broken the patent barriers built by foreign enterprises such as Qualcomm and Broadcom, ending the long-term dependence of China’s high-precision positioning field on imported chips.
The industrialization effect of the achievement is remarkable. In the first year of mass production, 118,000 positioning chips were sold, achieving an output value of 53 million yuan. In the second year, the sales volume of positioning chips reached 172,000 pieces and timing chips 28,000 pieces, with new output value of 76.336 million yuan from products and services. It is estimated that by 2026, the sales volume of timing chips will reach 30,000 pieces and positioning chips 500,000 pieces, with the core products and platform services contributing an additional output value of 220 million yuan.
Industry analysts pointed out that this breakthrough will strongly support the construction of Hubei’s world-class Beidou industrial base and accelerate the transformation of China’s Beidou industry from "following" to "leading". It will also provide core technical support for intelligent connected vehicles, smart cities, geological disaster monitoring and other fields, promoting the high-quality development of the global satellite positioning industry.
